I can't believe that some people answer these questions that have no idea what they are talking about. :(

Sorry, but I had to get that off my chest.

As a flower gardener of 35 years, a professional landscaper and Master Gardener of 22 years, I can tell you that you should always untangle the roots, at least the very bottom of the roots or root ball, whether it is a annual, perennial, biennial, shrub, tree, it don't matter.

Yes, some of them may still survive, but they will not thrive and most will choke themselves off as the roots continue to circle around each other.

If the plant is a perennial or the roots are very tough and matted, I often times will just take a serrated knife and slice a thin layer off the bottom and then make 3-4 evenly spaced shallow cuts (less than 1/4 inch deep) from the top of the rootball to the bottom. This injury actually encourages the plant to send it's energy to those damaged places to make new roots. (Kinda like our bodies do when we get a cut, it sends energy to that place to make new skin as quickly as possible.)

If it were ME, I'd go back and dig each one up and either pinch off the very bottom, cut off the very bottom if it is a large plant or at least untangle and damage the roots just a teeny bit and replant. After all your hard work, you want to give your plants the best chance of survival.
