Funerals and hayfever?

If you have an attendee, closely related to the deceased (extremely closely; you can't ask her not to come), who has had to visit the hospital due to her hayfever a few times in the past, is it acceptable to request people don't bring any flowers with them?

No. Protocol dictates that a funeral is for the deceased and should not be 'tweaked' to accommodate the comforts of the attendees. Everybody knows there will be flowers/pollen of some sort in the vicinity of a crematorium or churchyard and it is up to them to take adequate precaution. Gauze filter masks can be bought at most chemists.

You could request that in lieu of flowers people donate to a charity instead or something along those lines.

There are usually people who feel that to bury someone without flowers at the funeral is not very nice..but under the circumstances flowers will cause problems. Perhaps they can be removed from the coffin during the service and replaced for the burial.

I remember when my grandfather passed away, I was overseas and sent flowers to his funeral.

The funeral took place and afterwards the owner of the establishment said to my mother, there are enough flowers here already. Why dont you take these home and enjoy them..they are beautiful and a reminder of your daughters love for her grandfather and he would want you to find some solace during this time.
